With its own harbour on the Dortmund-Ems Canal as well as in the immediate vicinity of the motorways A43, A2 and A3 and a short distance from the A42 and the A40, the location provides an outstanding infrastructure.

On the map, Datteln is situated where the outskirts of the Ruhr merge with the greenery of the rural Münsterland.
Datteln is characterized by a unique waterway landscape. At the largest canal junction in the world, four canals meet: the Dortmund-Ems Canal, the Rhine-Herne Canal, the Wesel-Datteln Canal and the Datteln-Hamm Canal. That makes 17 kilometres of real aquatic sports and far more than 30 kilometres of attractive paths along the banks of the canals for hiking and cycling.
